Why Streaks Happen
What causes those unsightly streaks on your stove’s surface? Cooking. The simple act of using your stove often leads to streaks, so don’t fret if you face them on a regular basis. Splatters from cooking oils, spilled food, and even the hard water used to wipe up messes can all contribute to a less-than-shiny surface. Harsh or abrasive cleaning products can also leave a film on your stovetop.
For glass-ceramic stovetops, we recommend using a gentle formula, such as Weiman Daily Cooktop Cleaner, and a soft cloth to work it in. Stainless steel, a popular material for gas stovetops, benefits from a degreaser such as Dawn Powerwash, followed by a rinse with clean water and a thorough buff-dry with a microfiber cloth. Porcelain-enamel, or coated steel, is more delicate and should never be cleaned with a damp cloth while it’s still warm. Once the surface cools, wipe it down with warm, soapy water, rinse well to remove any residue, and dry it thoroughly with a microfiber cloth.
How To Get a Streak-Free Stovetop
If streaks remain, an additional step may be necessary. According to Kellsie Zapata, a professional house cleaner and content creator, you can get rid of them with a modest spritz of ammonia-free glass cleaner, such as Sprayway Glass Cleaner.

This hack is recommended only for stainless steel and porcelain-enamel stovetops. Many glass-ceramic stovetop manufacturers discourage the use of glass cleaners, particularly ammonia-based products such as traditional Windex, because they can leave residue, cause discoloration, or damage the surface over time. To eliminate streaks on those surfaces, use a dedicated glass-ceramic stovetop cleaner instead.
Start by cleaning your stovetop according to the material-specific recommendations above. Then, as Zapata advised in a recent TikTok, “finish with a light spray of glass cleaner and buff it out.” She applies Sprayway Glass Cleaner directly to a clean microfiber cloth, noting that “a little goes a long way.” Whatever product you choose, make sure it’s an ammonia-free formula to protect your appliance. Over time, harsh ammonia can discolor aluminum burners, pit stainless steel, and damage plastic dials.
While you can find ammonia-free liquid glass cleaners, Sprayway’s aerosol formula doesn’t leave behind splatters or wet marks. It’s a thick foam that comes out in an even mist. And because it contains less moisture than liquid glass cleaner, it’s much easier to buff into the stovetop until dry. Taking this extra step guarantees a streak-free surface that shines.
