Just Brew It

It’s a simple fix: Freeze your leftover coffee into cubes instead of letting it go to waste. Remember to let the residual liquid cool completely before adding it to an ice cube tray.

You can use any ice cube tray, but a silicone one makes it especially easy to pop out the frozen cubes. Next time you want to enjoy an iced coffee, use the coffee cubes instead of regular ice. You won’t have to dread those last few sips that usually turn watery and unpleasant.

This hack works best if you have a drip coffee maker, French press, cold brew maker, or moka pot. However, if you own a single-serve machine — such as a Keurig or Nespresso — you can simply brew a few pods on the lowest ounce setting, cool the coffee, and freeze it in an ice cube tray. This results in delicious, concentrated cubes that won’t water down your drink.

Use Caffeine Caution

Keep in mind that this trick adds more coffee to your glass, which changes both the flavor and the caffeine content. Taste-wise, it can make the drink more bitter depending on how many coffee cubes you use. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, you might want to pour less coffee in your glass — or just use decaf coffee for your cubes.

You can also customize your cubes with mix-ins. If black coffee is too bitter, freeze a second tray of half-and-half, oat milk, or creamer. Add the coffee and cream cubes to your next iced coffee in equal parts to keep the flavor perfectly balanced.
