A Hack You’ll Be a Fan Of

Science tells us that cold air is denser than warm air. In practice, this means that cold air sinks to the floor while hot air rises toward the ceiling. This is why you should place a portable fan as low to the ground as possible, where it can easily capture and circulate the coolest air in the room.

But height is just one factor worth considering — placement within the room matters just as much. If it’s sitting smack dab in the middle of the space, the cool air will essentially orbit the fan in a tight circle, getting trapped in a cycle of being sucked in and blown right back out. Ultimately, this prevents the fresh air from reaching the rest of the room.

Positioning the fan in the corner delivers much better results. The walls act as a natural guide, allowing the airflow to hug the flat surfaces and shoot straight out toward the center of the room. Just angle the fan outward and leave a few inches of clearance from the wall so the back of the unit has enough room to pull in air. In a similar vein, avoid pointing the fan at large furniture or other obstructions that can disrupt the airflow.

While these steps will vastly improve your home’s airflow, there’s one more trick for those swelteringly hot days: Place a bowl of ice cubes directly in front of the fan. As it blows across the ice, it captures the chilled air and mimics the effect of an air conditioner, keeping you cool and comfortable.
