Rain-X Marks the Spot
Rain-X is a hydrophobic water repellent originally designed for car windshields. But this brand-name product has uses that extend far beyond the driveway and into the bathroom — especially when it comes to shower glass. Because Rain-X creates a slick barrier on glass, water beads up and rolls right off, reducing the potential for hard-water stains or soap scum to form.
While you can use either the original Rain-X Glass Water Repellent or Rain-X Shower Door Water Repellent, we recommend the latter, as it’s formulated specifically for bathroom use with a milder odor and a safer evaporation rate for indoor air quality. Spray the product directly onto the interior side of the shower glass, wait two to five minutes for a slight haze to develop, then use a dry paper towel or a clean microfiber cloth to work the product into the surface. Buff until the streaks disappear and you’re good to go.
Once applied, Rain-X protects shower glass for weeks. Depending on your water conditions, the manufacturer states that the barrier can last up to three months. When you notice hard-water stains reappearing, just reapply.

Additional Tips and Cautions
While Rain-X is highly effective at keeping hard-water stains at bay, there are a few risks worth noting. First, use Rain-X glass repellent only on glass doors — never plastic ones, which the formula can damage. Also, keep in mind that Rain-X can lock in existing grime. To avoid this, thoroughly clean and dry the shower glass before applying the product.
Furthermore, be careful not to let excess product drip down onto the tile or tub floor. It can make these surfaces extremely slippery, posing a major fall risk. Always apply Rain-X with caution to keep the product where it belongs.
