A Well-Rounded Solution

Most of us place our toothbrush on the charging stand immediately after we’re done using it, leaving it there until it’s time to brush again. During this downtime, gravity pulls gunk from the brush head toward the base, where it cakes onto the charger. Regular wipe-downs help, but there’s a way to make that cleanup even easier.

All you need is a single cotton round — one of the inexpensive circular cotton pads that are used to apply or remove makeup. Cut a small slit into the middle of the round, then slide it over the tiny piece jutting up from the charging base of your electric toothbrush. The cotton forms a protective barrier to capture grime before it reaches the base. As gunk starts to accumulate, throw out the old cotton round and replace it with a fresh one. Repeat as needed.

You can also stop buildup at the source. The simplest way to avoid a goopy mess is to wash the brush with water after each use, then wipe it down with a clean paper towel to remove any residue.

Gunk is easy to spot and wipe off the brush head, but microscopic bacteria can hide in plain sight. This is why it’s a good idea to sanitize your toothbrush head regularly. One of the most effective methods involves a UV sanitizer, which mounts onto the wall and removes 99.9% of bacteria using UV light alone. You may also consider putting the brush head into an antibacterial mouthwash for 30 seconds or in a hydrogen peroxide solution (1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 cup of water) for 15 minutes. If you choose to go this route, submerge only the brush head into the solution, not the whole toothbrush, or you risk shorting out the electrical components.
