The Science Behind It
Coca-Cola has a pH of around 2.37, making it highly acidic. That acidity comes from phosphoric acid — a flavor enhancer that’s also a key ingredient in heavy-duty cleaning products designed to cut through grease. It’s why Coke is so effective at treating oil stains on concrete.
Pop the Top and Scrub
If you want to try this hack, conduct a spot-test first to ensure the cola doesn’t cause any discoloration. Pour 1 tablespoon of Coca-Cola on a stain-free, hidden patch of concrete, let it sit for two to four hours, then scrub, rinse, and let it dry completely before assessing the results. Testing a bare spot clearly shows whether the soda strips the sealant or discolors the concrete.
If it’s safe to proceed on a larger stain, pour one or two cans of room-temperature Coke onto the oil stain and let it sit for two to four hours so the acid can break down the grease.
Next, scrub the stain with a stiff-bristled brush, wash the area with warm, soapy water (using a degreasing liquid dish soap is best), and finish with a clean water rinse to flush away the oil and pest-attracting sugars. The oil stain should be gone or noticeably faded. Repeat the process as needed if discoloration remains.
Keep in mind that phosphoric acid cleans by eating away at the top layer of concrete. Because of this, using Coke repeatedly can cause permanent spotting or physical damage to the concrete.

Acid-Free Alternatives
If you want a less abrasive option, consider WD-40 or Dawn dish soap instead. While Coca-Cola works better on deeply set stains, these alternatives dissolve grease without harsh acids, making them gentler on concrete. For WD-40, spray it directly onto the stain, let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush, and rinse the residue with warm, soapy water followed by clean water. For Dawn dish soap, dampen the concrete with hot water, apply a generous layer of soap, scrub it into the stain using a stiff-bristled brush, and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing the area with hot water.
