How To Ward Off Moths Naturally
Mothballs are a go-to for many people, since they kill moths, their larvae, and their eggs. The downside: Mothballs leave your clothes with a strong, sharp chemical scent, and they’re toxic not only to moths but also to humans and pets. Prolonged exposure to the fumes can cause health issues ranging from headaches to liver damage. Fortunately for all of us, mothballs aren’t the only way to protect your garments from these hungry insects.
Cedar and lavender team up as a natural remedy that smells amazing and wards off moths. While they don’t actually kill the moths, they do keep them at bay, since moths don’t love the combined aroma. While we might think this combination smells divine, moths are easily overwhelmed by cedar and lavender’s volatile aromatic oils, making the dark spaces they inhabit feel uninviting. Bonus: This combination can also mask the smell of animal fibers that moths are drawn to.
Next time you spot dried lavender at a local market, pick some up and place sprigs in a drawstring sachet bag. You can also buy dried lavender flowers on Amazon and fill your own sachets or sew small cotton pouches. Sprinkle some cedar chips into the mix, or place cedar blocks in your closet — another solid method to keep moths away.
If your closet has an outlet, add a few drops of lavender and cedar oil to an essential oil plug-in. Additionally, you can combine 20 drops each of lavender and cedar essential oils with ¼ cup of a carrier oil, like jojoba oil. Pour the mixture into a small bud vase and add reed diffuser sticks to waft the aroma around the space.
