One question has long plagued humans, though, presumably since the whisk was invented in the 15th century. How do you properly clean it? A dishwasher is a modern solution, but if you’re hand-washing, getting a whisk completely clean can prove tricky. Between the low surface area of the wires, the rounded shape, and the convergence of wires at the top, bits of food have plenty of places to hide. Luckily, there’s a simple fix.
Where There’s a Whisk, There’s a Way
Most people hold the handle and scrub the whisk’s wires while it’s still in its balloon shape. But there’s a much more efficient method. Grab the top wire and pinch, gathering several wires flat against one side. Next, pinch the remaining wires to the other side. The whisk should form a flat rainbow shape, with open space in the middle. Now proceed with cleaning. With the whisk in this flattened state, a sponge can scrub all of the wires easily.
Another Way To Clean Your Whisk
Prefer another method? Fill a bowl with warm, soapy water and whisk the solution vigorously — with the wires fully submerged — until the tool comes out clean. Then rinse the whisk in clean water and dry as normal. To wash a whisk with sticky or stubborn residue (like cookie dough), soak it in warm, soapy water for up to an hour first, then proceed with whisking the water until the wires run clean.
