How To Get Rid of Hard-Water Stains Without a Remover

If you’ve ever cleaned with white vinegar, you know that it’s just as good as — if not better than — store-bought products. Since it’s mildly acidic, vinegar dissolves grease and wards off bacteria. Plus, it’s deodorizing. White vinegar can also break down stubborn hard-water stains without excessive elbow grease. Simply soak paper towels in undiluted vinegar, place them on top of the buildup, and let them sit overnight to work that dissolving magic. In the morning, gently scrub the area with a nonabrasive sponge, rinse, and voilà!

This method works because vinegar’s acidity dissolves alkaline calcium carbonate and limescale, helping to lift that hard-water buildup. The hack is safe on most surfaces, including faucets, showerheads, glass, bathroom tiles, and other metal fixtures.

However, avoid using it on natural stone and cast iron, since the chemical makeup can be too strong for these materials. If you have hard-water stains on marble countertops, use a hard-water remover for stone. For cast iron, dilute vinegar with equal parts water, gently scrubbing the surface. Let it dry completely and apply a light layer of oil to condition.
